What counts as WEEE waste?
According to UK legislation, there are fourteen categories of WEEE waste that businesses need to be aware of. These are:
Large appliances
This is any large electric appliance and includes refrigerators, freezers, ovens, and dishwashers.
Small appliances
Small or handheld household items like microwaves, toasters, vacuum cleaners, and mixers.
IT and telecoms
Computers, photocopiers, fax machines, and telephones are all recyclable IT equipment.
Consumer products
Domestic items like TVs, video cameras, speakers, and radios, all count as WEEE waste.
Lighting
Both compact and straight fluorescent tubes and high intensity discharge lamps are WEEE.
Electric power tools
Items like chainsaws, drills, and sewing machines all count, but not large-scale stationary tools.
Toys, leisure, and sports equipment
Includes home gym equipment like static bikes, games consoles, and toys with electric components.
Medical equipment
Dialysis machines, analysers, and medical freezers must be recycled after they have been properly cleaned.
Monitoring equipment
Thermostats, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and other regulators and monitors fall under WEEE.
Automatic dispensers
Dispensing equipment like coffee machines and ATMs count as WEEE and must be properly dealt with.
Display equipment
Equipment used for displays in retail and hospitality often include elements that must be recycled.
Appliances containing refrigerants
All items containing refrigerants fall under WEEE, including air conditioners, mini fridges, and dehumidifiers.
Lamps and LEDs
Gas charge lamps and any LED light sources all have components that can be recycled.
Photovoltaic panels
Solar panels are full of unique wiring and materials that means they must be responsibly disposed of.
